The triple impact of music
Take a few spoons of oriental inspirations, add some scandinavian climates and flavour it with chilly souce of rock guitars. Now pour it into a boiling pot of Belarusian folk music. If you mix it really well you will taste the best dish served by Troitsa.
Folk is not just a kind of music. It is not a collection of sounds and instruments, but it’s a spirit of the nation expressed by artists. This is how Troitsa understands the mission of folk music. They know their history and tradition very well, but they are also aware that to be alive folk music must stay in a close relation with the present of the people and modern culture.
Ivan Ivanovich Kirtchuk an inspirer and founder of the group had worked on the Belarussian ethnographic material on the University of Culture in Minsk before he started professionally dealing with music. The idea of popularizing national songs first appeared in 1986, but it took 10 years to realize this project. In 1996 Troitsa – ‘the trinity’ came into being. From the very begining critics and publicity were surprised by the number of musical instruments used on the scene. Troitsa’s concerts fascinate not only because of sounds but they can also impress visually - spectators have the opportunity to admire different forms of traditional instruments from all around the world. Folk-fusion – Belarusian national music influenced by world music – this is what you can expect from Troitsa.
The collective started touring in 1997 with a visit to Russia. Although kindly accepted, Troitsa must have waited till Netherlands’ tour to be fully appreciated. Western Europe discovered new values in the refreshing, stormy blow of Belarusian folk music. Soon after the tour Troitsa released in Netherlands its first album “Troitsa” (1998). What’s interesting is that the first album written and recorded completely in collective’s homeland was 2004’ “Sem” whereas all other albums were released by Netherlands’ PAN Records.
1999 was an important year in Troitsa’s work – the collective broke and the leader, Ivan Ivanovich started his own projects. At that time he visited Bosnia with performances of Belarus theatre “Batleika”. Next year his solo album, "Heritage Of The Lost Villages" was released. The artistic goal of this album was to present as limited use of voice and instruments as possible in order to create pure music.
In 2000 Ivan Ivanovich Kirtchuk invited his student, the guitar player Jury Dmitriev and the drummer, ex-participant of group "Kniaz Myshkin” Jury Pavlovskij to give Troitsa a chance of another life. The same year Ethno Trio Troitsa gave its first concert in Minsk.
Although the collective released a few albums, still the best opportunity to listen to it is a participation in concerts. Folk music is like a living organism – it needs space to sound better, it needs spectators’ reaction, to stay in dialogue with them and Troitsa understands it very well. Only in 2003 they played at different festivals in Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Bosnia, Belarus and Estonia. In 2002 they have visited the biggest ethnic festival "Rain Forest" in Malaysia and in August 2005 Troitsa has been invited to EBU Folk Festival to Gdansk, Poland.
Apart of performing folk music, Ethno Trio Troitsa took part in recording to the Belarus Depeche Mode tribute album and in 2004 the collective recorded a soundtrack to a children´s film "Small fugitives".

The founder of Belarusian Troitsa, Ivan Ivanovich Kirtchuk established the collective in 1996. Since that time the band has changed its musicians and transformed its name into the “Ethno Trio Troitsa”. In 2000 Yury Paulouski and Yury Dzmitieu joined the band. Two years later "Ethno Trio Troitsa" has visited the biggest ethnic festival "Rain Forest" in Malaysia. The collective is known from using traditional instruments from all over the world (aredomras, smyks, pipes, mouth harmonicas, reed sticks, zhaleykas, lyres, ocarinas, jawharps, kalimbas, dudas, rainmakers, zithers, gongs, darabukas, gundangs, horsebells, cowbells, bamboofons and many others).
