Composing Reality
Croitoru is drawn to imagery of women and fashion, subverting feminine typologies defined by clothing and style. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in Romania and she has also had work published in lifestyle magazines such as 2000+, Masculin, Elle, Focus and Exces.
Critic Adela Vaetisi writes in Artphoto, the Romanian contemporary art magazine, ´Alexandra Croitoru knows that, in the universe of simulacra, the artists shape their own identity by producing stories for the use of everyone, the events of their lives having the quality of scenes created and staged for mass consumption, while the seduction comes from the illusion of complicity they manage to offer the spectator.´ Summing up Croitoru´s approach, she says, ´what gives authenticity to all these projects by Alexandra Croitoru is the personal manner of combining the theme (the ego building itself by watching and by offering itself to the surrounding world) with the means of rendering it (with no technical sophistications, elaborate only on a compositional level) on the one hand, and the sense of humour with a spontaneous intelligence and the knowledge to play with the quotation, the cliché and the etiquette on the other hand.´
Alexandra Croitoru participates in the Biennial of Contemporary Visual Arts by Balkan Female Artists in Sofia in 2003. Recent exhibitions include ´Preview´ at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest and ´Casual Photography´ in the Design Forum Galleria, Helsinki in 2003 and ´Rendez-vous roumain´ at Espace en cours, Paris in 2002.
Alexandra Croitoru was shortlisted for the Visiting Arts/Spike Island International Fellowship 2001 on the nomination of Iosif Kiraly of Subreal.
