Thai consumer society
In his installations and performance works the Thai artist Surasi Kusolwong creates ironic reflections of the modern consumer society. In works like Minimal Factory ($1 Market), everything the Same Price on Floating Air Market (one Euro) Kusolwong is changing the gallery-room to a typical Thai street market. Here, among the profusion of the market, all kinds of publicity signs and accompanied by Thai pop songs, played on a small stereo apparatus, it´s all about buying small kitsch things for small money.
Trivial, but magical things to collect and place in private memory shelves.
On the day of the fernissage the artist places himself in the centre of the event and speed up the buying by megaphone.
When the deal is made, the customers can have a drink in the small bar, which
Kusolwong has built in a corner of the gallery.
The fact that everything has the same price is an important part of the aesthetics behind Surasi Kusolwongs work. So the hierarchies are removed, art and product markets are combined and turn out to be a mixture of a museum and a shop.
This is a modern version of the Paris passages from mid 19th Century, which Walter Benjamin was so thrilled by.
The entire world is there at the same time. And when all the products are sold, the gallery room stands back with its minimalist atmosphere of emptiness.
